Last year we introduced the Facebook Fellowship program to help support the inventive research in the academic world. We were thrilled with the response to the program during its first year, both in terms of the number of applications and the range of applicable research areas. We have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know our inaugural class of Facebook Fellows, and it is clear that we have a lot to learn from the academy.

Today we’re happy to announce another year of support for Ph.D. students in the 2011-2012 school year. We have decided to expand the areas of interest to include a number of more specific disciplines related to Facebook’s core interests including computational advertising, fault tolerance, and human-computer interaction, to name a few. We have also decided to expand the reach of the program, so this year we will be accepting applications from Ph.D. students studying at international universities in addition to applications from Ph.D. students studying in the United States. We will be offering five fellowships this year, and each fellowship will include payment of tuition and a US$30,000 stipend, in addition to other great benefits.

If you or someone you know fit these eligibility requirements and are doing innovative research we should be aware of, we hope to see your application soon. The important dates for this year are:

  • February 28, 2011: Applications for the fellowship must be submitted in full
  • April 8, 2011: Award recipients will be notified

In addition to announcing the program, we also invite faculty and students interested in the program to like the Facebook Fellowship page for updates on the program, details about the submission process and answers to frequently asked questions.

We’re looking forward to another amazing year of fellowships!
